Suppose a museum is being built in Chicago and the designers in Los Angeles need the dimensions of an 1870s bicycle that is tucked away in the museum’s collection. Internet-based databases are powerful, password-protected tools that provide immediate access to any detail — and the ability to make updates at any time, from any place, that will be seen by the next person to log on.
I came to HTML through my earlier experience with databases, to create an appealing interface for dozens of arcane data fields. But it has proved to be an invaluable introduction to the art of presenting almost any kind of information, and making the best use of all the Web has to offer.
